Heavy rain pummels southeast Queensland

4.39pm: The SES has been busy responding to approximately 280 requests for help today. Most have been requests for help to fix leaking and damaged roofs, or repair other rain damage.

4.16pm: The Queensland Police Service has Tweeted to dispel rumours of a major infrastructure disaster north of Brisbane.

"#mythbuster The Hornibrook bridge HAS NOT collapsed. It was demolished last year. The Ted Smout Bridge is also not underwater," they say.

Myth busted! (And we assume the northbound Houghton Highway is similarly unaffected.)

4.09pm: Residents in the Moreton Bay Regional Council suburb of Burpengary have now being advised to evacuate.

The council says people in and around Dale Street should self-evacuate this afternoon.

"Council is warning local residents there may be a significant risk of flood damage to low lying properties in the area as the river height at the Dale Street gauge rose to 8.8 metres at 3:30pm," the council says.

Residents were encouraged to stay with friends and family away from the threat area. If that was not an option, the council has established an evacuation centre at the Narangba Community Centre, at 229 Mackie Road.

Meanwhile, the Moggill Ferry is reportedly running again.

3.40pm: Energex is reporting more power outages this afternoon, with 1649 homes and businesses without power. As many as 1183 homes in the Brisbane region have lost power.

3.37pm: With as much as 80 millimetres of rain expected to hit the city this afternoon, here’s a rundown of the falls since 9am today.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology: 44mm has fallen in Brisbane;8mm has fallen at Logan; and83mm has fallen at Redlands.

Across the state big falls have been felt at: Sugarbag Road, Aroona on the Sunshine Coast (146mm); Meridan Way, Meridan Plains (118mm); Bracken Ridge (97mm); Dunwich (89mm); and Geebung (81mm).

3.21pm: Energex says power has been returned to most of the thousands of homes and businesses who were blacked out this afternoon.

There are still 360 outages across SEQ, however, including 227 in the Brisbane region.

3.01pm: Translink has updated the list of bus routes that will have diversions in place, and some stops missed, this afternoon. Full details on the Translink website here.

Translink is also warning of general delays on the bus, train and ferry networks.

And this may or may not be weather-related, but we think it's relevant anyway. Commuters may experience delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions on the Caboolture and Sunshine Coast lines, following a track fault at Carseldine.

And the Moggill Ferry is currently out of action.

2.43pm: The weather bureau has cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning issued earlier this afternoon for SEQ (see 1.32pm).

There is currently no immediate threat of severe thunderstorms in the southeast. The bureau is still warning of heavy rain for much of the southeast region.

The heaviest rain was moving over Moreton Bay and heading to the northern parts of Brisbane at 2.30pm, BoM says. Predictions of one-hour rainfall totals of at least 50mm-80mm in these areas.

2.31pm: The weather isn't looking good for Australia Day. The annual event at Evandale Parklands on the Gold Coast has been cancelled due to the rain - it takes two days to set up and they haven't caught a break in the weather.

2.29pm: Australian Traffic Network says congestion is starting to ease after a truck and car crash on the Riverside Expressway, southbound, just past the Victoria Bridge. Those waiting in jams on Coronation Drive take heart.

2.21pm: It seems there might not be releases from North Pine Dam after all (see 1.50pm). SEQ Water Grid just tweeted at Queensland Police there were currently no releases planned for the dam, but they were monitoring it and would re-evaluate as the day progressed.

2.10pm: Reds star Quade Cooper has just tweeted: "Training is cancelled as the fields are literally under water." Hasn't Ewen heard of the old adage, 'Can't train in the rain, can't play in the rain'?!?

2.06pm: Energex reports a further 980 homes and businesses are without power in South Brisbane, bringing the total to 3451 customers without power in southeast Queensland.

2.02pm: The heaviest rain on the BoM radar is moving over Moreton Bay towards the northern parts of Brisbane and parts of the Sunshine Coast.

Forecasters expect hourly rainfall totals of 50 to 80mm in these areas.

Sugarbag Road in Caloundra has received 112mm of rain since 9am, Bracken Ridge 93mm, Dunwich 86mm, and Geebung, 76mm.

1.50pm: Just in from Queensland Police: Youngs Crossing Rd will close temporarily while water is released from North Pine Dam this afternoon.

SEQWater says releases from Leslie Harrison Dam will start at 2pm, but they aren't expected to impact any roads.

1.47pm: The number of homes and businesses in south east Queensland has reached 2403, with Energex reporting 745 customers without power in East Brisbane and the bay islands.

1.45pm: The Sunshine Coast Daily has the latest situation on the Sunshine Coast.

1.36pm: If your car is parked close to the Eastern Busway stop at Stones Corner, it's advisable that you move it, or at the very least check it.

Norman Creek at Stones Corner is rising quickly, according to Brisbane City Council.

1.32pm: A fresh severe thunderstorm warning from BoM. Very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Tangalooma, northern Moreton Bay and southern Moreton Island about 1.25pm.

Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Mud Island, Deception Bay waters and Bribie Island by 1.55pm and Redcliffe, Scarborough and Beachmere by 2.25pm.

Very heavy rainfall and flash flooding are likely in these areas, the bureau says.

1.22pm: Energex is reporting that 401 homes across much of the Lockyer Valley are without power.

Earlier power outages at Beenleigh have been fixed. Crews are still working to restore power to Carseldine, parts of the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Across the southeast, there are a total of 1,821 homes and businesses without power.

1.18pm: Camping grounds on Stradbroke Island have been closed due to flooding (One Mile at Dunwich and Adder Rock). Roads on Stradbroke and the bay islands have been affected, including Kate St, Macleay Island and High Central Rd, Russell Island.

1.14pm: Burpengary residents have been put on alert that flash flooding is occuring in Dale St. The river height at the Dale St gauge has risen to 7.5m.

Local residents are advised to monitor local flood conditions, warnings and advice. People in Dale St and surrounds are encouraged to secure their property in case of flood.

1.10pm: Our list of road closures now includes the Gold Coast and Redlands. Check your route before heading out on the roads, and stay safe.

12.58pm: The heaviest rain on the BoM radar has moved from the Sunshine Coast and is headed over Moreton and Stradbroke islands and northern areas of the Gold Coast.

12.39pm: Three people have been pulled from their cars in separate incidents as they tried to cross flooded creeks in Brisbane’s west today.

Twice this morning drivers got stuck in flood waters trying to get through Gap Creek Road at Kenmore Hills.

A third person got into trouble trying to cross Grandview Road at Pullenvale.

The message from police and emergency services is: If it's a flooded road, forget it.

12.22pm: Queensland Police just posted on Facebook there are reports of teenagers playing near storm water drains on Wilga St Wacol.

''Playing in floodwaters or near storm water drains is dangerous. Don't do it! Parents keep kids away,'' they say.

12.15pm: The weather bureau reports the heaviest rain on the radar is moving over the Sunshine Coast, with areas north of Golden Beach recording 82mm in just one hour (10.30 to 11.30am).

Since 9am, Sugarbag Road (Caloundra) has received 82mm, Bracken Ridge (north Brisbane) recorded 75mm, Dunwich (North Stradbroke Island) 74mm and Geebung (north Brisbane) has recorded 60mm.

12.12pm: Police have issued a warning to motorists to drive to the conditions.

"In wet weather, motor vehicles do not handle in the same way, braking distances increase and tyres can lose grip. Visibility is reduced due to rain and road-spray and driving becomes more demanding on the driver's attention,'' acting Chief Superintendent Andy Morrow said.

Drivers are asked to take even more care during the school run and to remember there are more than just cars on and around the road.

12.09pm: SEQ dams are slowly filling and the flood operations centre has been mobilised to monitor the impact of the rainfall expected this week.

There are no planned releases from the major dams at this stage, although water is spilling over the top of non-gated smaller dams.

North Pine Dam is now at 95.9 per cent full and increasing; Somerset Dam is at 99.6 per cent and decreasing; and Wivenhoe Dam is at 76.1 per cent and increasing.

12.03pm: Energex is reporting there are more than 1000 homes without power across the Glasshouse Mountains, Beerwah and Eudlo areas.

On the Gold Coast, a tree branch and water in equipment have contributed to a power loss for 178 customers across Nerang, Southport, Varsity Lakes and the Currumbin Valley.

Parts of Carseldine are without power, with Energex working to restore supply to 95 customers. Nearly 70 homes are without power in Beenleigh.

11.49am: Flash flooding has hit Goodna, local councillor Paul Tully reports.

''Notorious trouble spots closed to traffic include Albert St and Smiths Rd with lower James St and parts of Woogaroo St likely to be closed in the next few hours,” he says.

''The bottom car park at the Centro Shopping Centre at Toombul is starting to flood. If your vehicle is parked there, you need to move it.''

11.44am: After some closures this morning due to the tide, all beaches on the Gold and Sunshine coasts have re-opened.

Not that Gold Coast chief lifeguard Warren Young understands why anyone would want to go.

"There are rain squalls and wind squalls and a swell of about a metre," he said.

"Really, it's just a bit messy."

11.41am: This morning the Department of Community Safety issued a list of problem sites that are prone to flash flooding. Here's their list.

11.32am: The SES has already responded to 66 calls for help since 6am today. About 20 of them were in Brisbane, 25 in Southport and the rest on the Gold and Sunshine coasts. Most of the calls were for leaking roofs, and some were for sandbags.

A reminder: phone the SES on 132 500 for storm damage, rising flood water, fallen trees on buildings and damaged roofs. In a life-threatening emergency, phone 000.

11.20am: The weather bureau has just issued a coastal wind warning from Sandy Cape to Point Danger, including Moreton Bay. Forecasters expect the deepening trough over the interior of Queensland will result in strengthening north-easterly winds over the southern coastal waters late today and into tomorrow.

Story published, 10.55am: Weather forecasters have renewed their warnings for heavy rain falls across most of southeast Queensland.

A car became stuck in water on a Gold Coast road and had to be pulled free by a tow truck.

The driver wasn’t injured, but police have renewed their calls for motorists to stay clear of flood waters.

Average January rainfall totals have already been exceeded in most areas, with the drenching set to continue tomorrow.

The Bureau of Meteorology severe weather warning for most large populous areas of the state still stands, with 24-hour rainfalls of more than 150mm possible.

The heaviest rainfall recorded by the bureau in the past 24 hours to 9am was at their station at Horton Creek, near Beenleigh, with 182mm.

Flash flooding remains a concern and BoM forecaster Vinord Anand said people should keep an eye on their local waterways.

“The locals know which streams and rivers are more likely to overflow in heavy rainfall better than me and at this stage, it is localised flooding,” he said.

“Most of the rivers are rising and some would be straining, but most of the rivers are below minor river flooding levels.”

At 10am AEST, the heaviest rain was located on radar moving inland near Mt Glorious and also over Stradbroke Island and far southern parts of Moreton Bay, with one hourly rainfall totals in the order of 30-40mm recorded.

In the 24 hours to 9am AEST, Hotham Creek (near Beenleigh) and Dunwich (on Stradbroke Island) received 182mm and 142mm respectively.

A flood warning is current for coastal rivers and streams from Rainbow Beach to the New South Wales border and adjacent inland catchments.

7am: A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of south-east Queensland today after more than 100mm of rain fell over some areas in the past 24 hours.

The warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology this morning covers regions from Wide Bay Burnett to the south-east coast and through to the Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.

Flooding in coastal streams and rivers between Rainbow Beach and Redcliffe is possible, with the heaviest rain falling north of Brisbane.

Gavin Holcombe, a senior forecaster with the bureau, said the upper trough that brought yesterday's rain was still moving slowly, extending the wet conditions.

"It is still unstable and will stay that way at least until tomorrow," he said.

"It is very slow moving and it has already produced 24-hour falls of more than 100mm in some areas. Those heavy falls have been widespread on the Sunshine Coast.

"Falls in Brisbane and the Gold Coast have been less, we've been looking at between 40 and 60mm in those areas."

In the 24 hours to 4am, Bribie Island received 119mm of rain, with Boreen Point on the Sunshine Coast not far behind on 107mm.

The Brisbane Airport gauge recorded 44mm, while the Gold Coast Seaway registered 33.8mm.

The trough is expected to intensify before bringing some relief, which could occur as early as tomorrow afternoon, meaning lighter showers instead of rain.

Temperatures this week will continue to be a few degrees below the 30-degree January average.
