Many thanks to all of those people who signed the petition to make the new 80km speed zones on the northern and eastern approaches along the Kings Highway into Braidwood permanent, to save our poplar trees from being removed, and to have a second pedestrian crossing installed on Wallace Street. We propose a ‘copy and paste’ of the existing one to just below the Duncan Street intersection.

The poplars are a significant landmark and heritage feature of the Kings Highway and are only one of the two remaining memorial tree avenues to King George V in NSW. Note that there is also a misconception that these trees are a memorial to our fallen soldiers – this is incorrect.
We had great support of the petition from people in Canberra, down the coast and there were people from as far and wide as the UK signing the petition online. Special thanks also to Rob Davidson who took the petition to his work in Canberra. With over 1600 signatures our message will be loud and clear for the Minister for Roads and Ports, the Hon Duncan Gay MLC, and his colleagues.
It was also good to see that business owners and Braidwood residents had been clearly conveying their messages loud and clear to the representatives from Roads and Maritime Services and Palerang Council at the Drop-in sessions last week. By 5:30pm on Wednesday afternoon, the Drop-in team was looking a little worse-for-wear.
I will share with you here just a few of the many positive comments received about our trees left by signees of the online petition: “These trees seem to form a path leading you to somewhere fairly special, which Braidwood certainly is.”; “Cutting down these beautiful trees down is not the solution to the problem - making the drivers take more responsibility for their actions is - it is the driver’s fault not the trees..?” and “..Don't cut them down they are like the soldiers of the highway welcoming us home.”
