Love them or loathe them, Braidwoods new concrete blister gutters outside the Bakery were not capable of taking the water from storms last week. While the historic granite gutters were flowing, the water was effectively dammed by the new concrete on Friday and Saturday, when brief but intense localised rainfall around Braidwood. Water across the footpath rose to the doorways of the bakery and bank.

On Friday the rain was accompanied by a mini ‘tornado’ that ripped through the town centre bringing down tree branches and flooding the footpaths.
Although the rainfall totals are not unusual in Braidwood throughout the year, according to Braidwood’s weatherman Roger Hosking, Saturday’s rain ranks 10 among the highest January daily rainfall since 1920. Up to the 12th January has been the 16th highest January total rainfall..
At least one main street residence had knee deep water rushing through their yard due to blocked drainage pipes.
The rain fall however has been varied around the district with some areas receiving little and one report from Budawang of around 160mm in the last week.
