Barry Jordan, who lives in Krawarree just south of Braidwood, has just competed in the 2015 US Open for Taekwondo which was held in Orlando, Florida. Barry also won a Gold medal at the 2014 tournament which was held in Las Vegas. The tournament is one of the biggest in the world with 87 countries participating.
Barry is a 5th Dan ‘Master’ in WTF Taekwondo and has a martial arts club in Canberra called Mu Do Taekwondo. He also conducts coaching clinics at his farm in Krawarree. He competes nationally and internationally as part of his goal for personal continuous improvement and to ensure his students have confidence in their Head Instructor.
Barry commenced competition in 2011 as an Australian representative at the World Championships in Russia. He has since represented Australia on four other occasions, won the Australian Champion title four times and has been ranked 5th in the world. He still trains to improve on those rankings.
Barry promotes taekwondo as not just a sport for the young, but for the whole family where the focus is on training and disciplining the mind along with the body. It is a good exercise for children who are still growing as well as a good way for grown-ups to increase their physical endurance.
Taekwondo's movements require extensive use of the joints, which increases the limberness of one's body. It's also a great way to relieve stress and get a good workout.
For the younger students, WTF Taekwondo is a sport and can take you all the way to the Olympics. It is not a requirement to do contact sparring if you just want to become healthy, toned and flexible. It is an art that you can learn over a whole lifetime.
