People from suburbs including the bay islands, North Stradbroke Island, Redland Bay, Cleveland, Thornlands and Wellington Point all felt the earth move and buildings shake just after 1.39pm.
Initial reports claim it was a magnitude 5.5 earthquake 131km north east of Rainbow Beach.
Weak aftershocks have been continuing in that area since the initial quake on Thursday of 5.3 just off Hervey Bay.
Other information from the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said a quake was detected with initial readings of magnitude 5.7 at 1.38PM.
The tsunami warning centre said based on the magnitude and location it has assessed that there is no tsunami threat to the mainland, island or Territories.
