Team 3, led by club president, Michael Toirkens, took on ‘underdogs of the year’, Team 1, led by Ian Howard. Team 1, having barely won a night all comp and sitting well at the bottom of the table, surprised all, particularly Nick “Federer” Fry (leader of Team 2) by beating the top of the table, Team 2 in the semi’s to make the GF.
Team 1’s obvious improvement was again evident on Wednesday night. Despite going down to Team 3, 11 sets to 5, 8 of those sets were decided by a 6-5 result.
There was fierce rivalry between husband and wife, Gordon and Emma, in the battle for the title, even bringing their children along to help keep their tempers under control! Thanks Molly and Angus.
Father and son teams of Ian & Ben and Craig and Chris fought gallantly for Team 1, but it was Joel Goode who brought Team 3 home to victory, not dropping a set all night. Despite playing two sets in the half dark (the wind had blown the lights out at the western end – yes, conditions were awesome!) he kept focus right to the end.
So with Craig Pettit now able to parade the trophy at work, Nick is still analysing what went wrong in the semi-final and getting a new plan in place for September.
