A Bendigo family was evacuated from their White Hills home overnight after a young man returned home in the early hours of the morning and attempted to cook himself a feed.

The man fell asleep with the stove on at about 3.45am this morning, causing the kitchen to catch fire and the St Killian Street home to fill with smoke.
Two Bendigo Fire Station appliances and eight firefighters extinguished the blaze but the family had to seek alternative accommodation for the night at least due to lingering smoke.
“It’s a timely reminder to be very careful when cooking,” a Country Fire Authority spokesperson said.
“Fortunately no one was injured, but this incident had the potential to be a whole lot worse.”
Bendigo firefighters have also attended two grass and scrub fires in recent hours.
Those include a fire in a vacant block in Long Gully and a one on the corner of High Street and Mimosa Street in Golden Square this morning.
The CFA spokesperson issued a reminder that the fire danger period begins tomorrow and asked residents to take precautions.
