The works on show are drawn together by the evocation of a sense of place. The artwork evokes the deeper realities which underly the landscape, portraying ‘abstract imaginings’ of the scene, rather than the physicality of the space.
Henderson’s interest is in the descriptions of place and how that relates to the landscape portrayed. In these paintings space is redefined and reshaped through the artist’s interpretation of the landscape.
Figures embodying social realism seek to draw the viewer into the painting’s story.
Works on display include some of a series of Braidwood paintings, as well as works completed in the NSW high country and paintings from earlier periods. Those paintings taken from the Braidwood series are largely representational landscapes, which allude back to Henderson’s earlier high country works.
Paintings drawn from different periods in Hendersons career represent his artwork from past years.
Henderson has lived in Braidwood with his wife since 2015. He moved to Australia in 1972 and has been artist in residence at three universities, including the University of New England in Armidale.
He holds a doctorate in Creative Arts from University of Wollongong.
- The exhibition will be on display at Altenburg & Co from June 2 to July.
