Five hundred and seventy one Australians have made the Australia Day honours list this year, an eclectic mix of unsung heroes and familiar faces.
At least one Australian from nearly every community across the country has been recognised for their contribution to architecture, the arts, business, community, the environment, health, education, politics, information technology, the law, media, politics, science, sport or religion.
Three hundred and seventy nine people have been granted Medals of the Order of Australia (OAM), 152 made Members of the Order of Australia (AM) and 36 made Officers of the Order of Australia (AO).
Just four people – former Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer, Reverend Professor James Haire, Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist Professor Brian Schmidt and former Australian Labor Party deputy leader Tom Uren - have been given the rare honour of being made Companions of the Order of Australia (AC).
