Recently the Braidwood squash club held its first championship competition for 15 years, which ran for 3 weeks. There were 34 eager participants from our last comp of 54. In the ‘A’ grade semi-finals Aaron Clarke out classed Jacob Camilleri winning in 3 games to nil. In the other semi-final Luke Staunton had to dig deep to triumph over a determined Michael Green winning 3 games to 2 with only a couple of points separating them.

With more players in ‘B’ grade we needed quarter finals and semi-finals to narrow the field. In the quarter finals Jake Bourne ended Ged Galvin’s campaign winning 3 games to nil. Daniel Camilleri and Andy Taylor had a fast paced game with Daniel Collecting the win 3 games to 1. Jo Parsons picked up an easy win over Johno Crisp who was unable to play in their game. In the last quarter final Tom Clarke out hit, out ran and out classed Tom Watson. For the second time in a week they went to battle with only 5 points separating them after 10 games of squash. Tom Clarke winning to fight on in the semis winning 3 games to 2 in both matches. This now meant that Jake Bourne played Daniel Camilleri in 1 semi-final and Tom Clarke play Jo Parsons in the other. Jake had an easy night with Daniel forgetting he had to play and Tom and Jo battled for 3 games with Tom being the victor winning 3 games to nil.
In ‘C’ Grade the competition was run a little different. With only 10 players and to avoid a lot of byes ‘C’ Grade played in a round robin with each player playing 4 games each. At the end of these 4 games the top 4 players with the most wins played off in the semi-finals. Jacob Moore continued his good form defeating Peter Raynolds 3 games to 1. Previous to this match Jacob hadn’t dropped a game. In the other semi-final Nick Harton defeated Damion Campbell-Davies 3 games to nil. Unfortunately for Damion he injured himself during the warm up and was under done but tried as always to win.
With an interested and enthusiastic crowd gathered in the stands to watch the best players from each grade take each other on Nick and Jacob took to the court first. Nick was the favourite to win the ‘C’ grade trophy when the draws where released three weeks earlier, but Jacob had firmed to favourite on the night after only dropping one game all competition as opposed to Nick dropping two. In an intense match Jacob failed to find his form that had led him to the grand final and Nick prevailed winning 3 games to nil. The score was 9-7, 9-1, 9-2. Jake and Tom entered the court, with Jake being a clear favourite to take the title. However for Tom, beating people ranked higher than him was something that he was use to after “upsetting “ every player he’d played to make it through to the grand final. With the little black ball being bashed hard and fast, yet precisely around the court, Jake emerged the winner of ‘B’ Grade with a similar score line to ‘C’ grade 9-2, 9-7, 9-1. Before Aaron and Luke played, the two losers from the semi’s played for 3rd and 4th in ‘A’ grade. Michael defeated Jacob 3 games to nil in a match where you couldn’t be certain if one player had hit a winner because somehow the other would just manage to make it to the ball. After that match Aaron and Luke descended to the court for the final game of the night and championships. Aaron showed his class and defeated an out of “top” form Luke in 3 games to nil. The game didn’t quite live up to the hype, but that’s not to say there weren’t some ridiculously long rallies and freakish shots by both players. The final score was 9-1, 9-2, 9-7.
After the games a presentation and BBQ was held. A huge thanks to Rooster Grant for cooking the meal that everyone enjoyed. Also on the evening we presented the “premiers” shirts to the winners from the S. Bevege Mechanical Repairs comp, from late last year. Thanks to Steve and the crew for your support.
