McAdam is professor of law, director of the Andrew and Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at UNSW, and co-author of 'Refugees: Why Seeking Asylum Is Legal and Australia's Policies Are Not' (with Fiona Chong; UNSW Press), which has just been released.
McAdam gave an update on the ongoing developments with the Cambodian deal and explain the place of Australia's policies within the international context. On a financial level, McAdam explained that Australia is spending $3.3 billion annually on it's off shore detention centres. Each refugee in detention off-shore is costing $400,000 per year, yet releasing them into the community on full benefits would be only $40,000, and much less if they were working.
