The main topic of conversation before players embarked upon another round of golf last Saturday was the potential of rain. Those in favour of a downpour cited the fact that the races were on and it inevitably rains and one or two produced satellite images of rain to the west.

Barb Stewart said she thought it would be fine until after the players had finished and as she was sponsoring the ladies event she felt her confidence was well placed. And so it was and although she won her trophy but declined to accept the prize the comment of the day goes to her. Here I am 80 and my handicap is still 28!
There were many in earshot who thought: good grief I hope I can still play at 80 and if our handicap is 28 that would be an unlikely bonus. The winner was Virginia Goot-Oobuk with 32 points from Di Freeman on a countback. The balls went to Jackie Clark and Michelle Henry.
The men’s event was sponsored by Michael Tillman-Ryan and won by the ever improving Romney Smith. The platypus was the runner up with the balls going to Rod Coady, Mike Fitzgerald and, on a countback from the NTP, Phil O’Toole, Mark Newman.
It was heavy going with the course lush and run a thing of the past. After last week’s pennants matches a Queanbeyan player asked that I pass on his congratulations to all the volunteers that had contributed to the course’s great condition. So, I asked him if he enjoyed the course. No, he replied, it is a pr’ck of a course but it is in great condition.
Braidwood’s Iceblues won their matches five to one and this week play the other contenders in their division, Yass at Yass. Good luck. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped prepare the course and assisted with the barbecue.
This afternoon at 3.30 a junior clinic will be held. These clinics will be held every Wednesday afternoon for the rest of the school term. The cost is $3 and is thus both a bargain and an opportunity. Again we thank the volunteers helping to encourage the juniors.
This Saturday there will be a committee meeting before the afternoon events. All are welcome to attend these meetings as the club is keen to hear the views of members. Don’t forget the Wayne Grady day and night on March 21. Tickets are available at the Club or Bendigo Bank. We also need contributions for the silent auction.
It is not often you see a professional golfer have an airswing but that was the case with Charlie Hull in the Ladies Masters who scored a triple bogie on a regulation par four. It just goes to show how even with skill and the advice of a caddie it is possible to do the unexpected. One of the commentators wondered why she didn’t play a lefthanded shot with the back of a 3 iron. His co-commentator asked how many players carried a 3 iron?
