As part of a program to improve school safety zones across NSW, Braidwood has now had solar lights installed at some of the 40km School Zone signs in Wallace Street, Elrington Street and Ryrie Street.

The solar lights power LEDs in the sign to illuminate and flash during school arrival and departure times. Roads and Maritime Services is responsible for maintaining the system of flashing lights and signs. The installation of the lights was discussed by the Council’s Traffic committee before installation.
This system, known as the School Zone Alert System currently has 2473 flashing lights, which are located at 1224 school zones throughout NSW and provides this service for 1343 of NSW schools. The rollout of school zone flashing lights will see every school in NSW with a set of flashing lights by the end of this year.
Minister Gay said “These lights will be fitted at the main entry point for each school and include flashing lanterns and back to base technology. We’ve also got the popular Speed Adviser App, which uses audio alerts to inform drivers of operating school zones and if they exceed the speed limit with over 62,600 people downloading the App since it was released in February last year.”
