A sprinkle of patchy morning rain didn’t dampen spirits at the official Braidwood Outsiders launch last Friday in Ryrie Park. It seemed apt that during an event promoting healthy outdoor activity, Olympian Jane Flemming should stop by to grab a few handmade Nepali momos (dumplings). With skateboarding being added to the 2020 Olympic roster, perhaps one of our local groms will also represent the nation one day!

Some of the day’s activities included ping pong, slack lining and a boules comp taken out by George Hobart who won his family a fantastic handmade kite donated by Sandalwood Homewares. Sets from local DJs Morgx (Morgan Rodrigues) and Moonstompa (Edmund Morris) added to the festive vibes as the skies cleared and temperatures heated up for Braidwood’s first ever skate comp!
Local shredder Monty Crosbie took home some sweet “Liquid Ears” courtesy of Nomchong Electrical. He consistently stuck some difficult tricks to edge out his contemporary Isak Hilhorst. The young boys proved too good for veteran skaters Karuna Bajracharya and Charlot Bernardoff, who couldn’t keep pace with the new breed. Special thanks to St Bedes for the use of their basketball court.
The Outsiders raised just shy of $1000 on the day, partly through our (pay what you can) membership drive which saw around 50 locals join the club, and also through food stalls supplied with generous in-kind support from local sponsors Yerribah Berry Farm, Braidwood Butchery, Dojo Bread, Paydirt Eatery, Stur Gallery, IGA, Braidwood Bakery and the Snow Lion B&B.
Funds raised by the Outsiders will go towards the design of a cool new public space that will include a skatepark. Other suggestions have been to incorporate local sculpture/art, outdoor ping pong and a sensory garden. We look forward to sharing more ideas with the community at future events as we build towards an online crowd funding campaign for the design and consultation phase. We are pursuing several other major funding opportunities for the construction phase once the location and design has been agreed upon by the community.
