Following their zone debating success, the Year 7 and 8 Braidwood Central Year team of Maxx Bigg, Tashani Davidson-Fuller, Tegan Lewis and Ananta Bajracharya travelled to Queanbeyan to compete in the regional quarter-final against Monaro High from Cooma.

Queanbeyan High hosted the debate and provided lunch. Although they were not taking part, their generosity showed the valuable cooperation between public schools in our region.

After a process of topic elimination, and a coin toss to decide sides in the debate, Braidwood had to argue that the Olympics should be scrapped. In a close contest, Braidwood’s argument as to the Olympics’ enormous staging costs reducing essential welfare services, the culture of drug cheating and the negative outcomes of international rivalry won out over Monaro’s argument as to the importance of the Olympic spirit, athletes’ careers and public enthusiasm for the Games.
On Friday, the Braidwood team will travel to Smiths Hill High in Wollongong for a semi-final against either Goulburn High or Jindabyne Central, with a view to a final against Dapto, Woonona, Nowra or Smiths Hill.
