Sitting underneath the pool is a mire of corroded core plumbing cast iron pipes, causing the pool to leak a large amount of water each day. As they are integral to the pool, the pipes will be impossible to replace without major works.
Fifty years of subsidence means that the pool tiling also needs replacement.
Currently the council has $400,000 allocated to the refurbishment of the Braidwood and Captains Flat pools, but is seeking a grant from the Building Better Regions Fund.
The fund, which is competitively managed, could provide an additional $400,000 to the project. This would allow council to not only fix the major problems with the Braidwood pool, but to address infrastructure needs at the Captains Flat pool and upgrade amenities, such as shade sails and barbeces and change room facilities.
The council plans to use votes gained in an online petition to demonstrate the community’s support for the project, and signal to the fund the importance of the pools to the communities of Braidwood and Captains Flat.
