Down 27-5 at half time the Redbacks showed plenty of fight in the second half matching their opponents three tries apiece. Redbacks try scorers were Nick Roberts, Kiwi Hopkins, Ben Howard and Chris Howan. Sporting numerous injuries from the first two games of the season, the Redbacks have called on a few veterans to help bolster the bench, with Eddie Nom Chong, Adam Dixon and President James Royds all making strong appearances on the weekend. Assistant coach Nick Kemp said the team was starting to show positive signs and cohesion resulting from a number of strong training sessions focusing on fitness and getting the basics right. He expected the Redbacks to continue to improve as the season progressed.
Three points this week went to Kiwi Hopkins with another strong appearance at half back. His Kiwi partner in crime Chris Howan picked up two points with veteran Eddie Nom Chong taking one point.
Earlier in the day the Braidwood Black Widows took on the Gungahlin Eagles, which ended in a 15-15 draw. The team was up 15-nil in the last quarter, when the Eagles swooped in and evened the scores. Hayley Quill, Tamika Morgan and Courtney Doyle scored tries for the team.
Braidwood’s next home game will be on Saturday, May 6 against Bungendore.
