The election will be held on September 9, 2017.
Because of the local government amalgamations last year, only some councils have elections this year.
Surrounding and nearby regions – including Yass Valley, Goulburn Mulwaree, Upper Lachlan and the Eurobodalla – do not have elections this year.
However, Snowy-Monaro Regional Council, a merged entity of Bombala, Cooma-Monaro and Snowy River, is holding an election.
After this year’s election, all NSW councils will have their general elections in September 2020.
That’s four years on from the first portion of elections held last September for councils that did not merge.
Who am I voting for?
You will be voting for 11 councillors to represent the Queanbeyan-Palerang region.
In the previous election, in 2012, Queanbeyan had 10 councillors and Palerang had 9, including one mayor each.
Voters can keep updated on who is running for council through the Braidwood Times website and Facebook page.
Do I vote for a mayor?
No.
In the past, Queanbeyan residents have voted for their mayor, but Palerang residents have not.
In this election, the elected councillors will vote for the mayor.
Once elected, the mayor will hold office for two years.
The exception will be the second mayor of the new council.
The second mayor will hold office for one year only.
This is because the next full council election will take place in 2020.
What happens if I don’t vote?
If you don’t vote, you could be fined $55 by the NSW Treasury.
People who appear not to have voted in the election will be issued with a penalty notice.
If that occurs, you must pay the notice or provide an appropriate reason why you didn’t vote within 28 days.
