Noel is a Budawang Yuin man and has a great knowledge of Dhurga language and Yuin stories.
Noel told the children the stories of Gootgart the Frog, and Naran Naran the lyrebird. After the children had heard the stories, they acted out the story, being gootgart (frogs), mirringali (wombats), burru (kangaroos) and bumbi (eels), while Noel played his didgeridoo.
Noel also played the didgeridoo and the children played clapping sticks outside, while they walked around the playground.
Noel taught the children and teachers a welcome song, and a welcome dance.
The children will continue to learn and practice the song and dance, so that they can sing them when Noel and Trish come back to visit in the future.
Noel also talked to the children about what his ancestors would have done to stay warm in the Braidwood area in the winter, and showed the children a possum cloak. The children had turns of being wrapped in the soft, warm cloak!
Noel and Trish’s visit was a wonderful way for the children, and teachers to learn more about the Yuin Aboriginal culture, and this learning will continue to be included in the Preschool program.
Don’t forget that the Preschool’s annual Trivia night is on Saturday July 29. This is a FUNraising event for Preschool, so come along for a night of Trivia, games and laughs.
