From September 2015, green waste and food scraps collected from Braidwood, Bungendore and Captains Flat have been delivered to Landtasia Organic Farm at Mulloon for composing and return to the soil for several years.

Minutes published for Wednesday’s council meeting show a comment from the Service Manager of Utilities indicating that council’s contract with Landtasia concluded late in 2017.

Since the contact ended, the food component of the green waste has been manually extracted, and taken to landfill, according to the minutes. The rest of the organic waste has been processed by mulching and composing.

The comment was made in response to a notice of motion put forward by Councillor Peter Marshall, that council request a report on the progress of the implementation of the Palerang Waste Management Strategy from the General Manager.

Cr Marshall says he was was annoyed to discover that residents have been bagging food scraps for no purpose.

“We are diligently bagging up our compostable food scraps, and some poor council staff members have the gross job of rummaging through green waste and removing bags,” Cr Marshall said.

Landtasia advised Council of its intention not to continue beyond 30 September 2017, and continued for a further month, a QPRC spokesperson said.

Since that time Council has been investigating other options,.

The service was a complementary service to the general waste and recycling service.

A representative from council indicated residents have not been paying an additional fee as the service was complementary to existing waste collection services.
