Davies attended Braidwood Central School from kindergarten to Year 12. Her Higher School Certificate major work was selected for Art Express and shown at the Art Gallery of New South Wales last year. Some of these drawings and paintings will be included in the show, along with many more recent works. This is Davies’ first exhibition at home and first major exhibition.
The other artists in the show are Andrew Powell from Binalong and John Pratt from Canberra.
Powell has been exhibiting since the early 1980s after graduating from the Canberra School of Art. He is a painter, printmaker and installation artist with numerous art awards to his name. He is exhibiting at the Left Hand for the first time and his work will include paintings and collages.
Pratt is a Canberra-based printmaker who recently retired from teaching at the ANU. He has previously been exhibited at the Left Hand Gallery, most recently in a retrospective in 2014. He is showing woodcuts and collages in this exhibition.
Gallery owner Julian Davies says that these three artists have “very different approaches to making pictures, but are united by the quiet authenticity of their diverse sensibilities.”
The Left Hand Gallery is an independent and non-profit gallery that was established in Braidwood in 2010 with the aim of supporting imaginative visual artists free from the usual commercial pressures of mainstream galleries.
It shows three or four exhibitions a year, frequently featuring multiple artists. Ignoring trends or traditions, Julian Davies focuses on on encouraging handmade artworks that show the individual, idiosyncratic sensibility of their maker. He exhibits artists are from the local region and from much further afield.
The new exhibition will run for three consecutive weekends, starting on the weekend of 25th-26th August at the Left Hand Gallery, 81 Lascelles Street, Braidwood.
