Young swimmers keen to be part of Braidwood Swimming Club are invited to come along and register their interest. There'll be a barbecue from noon and parents will be able to sign up their children from 11.30am to 4pm. The club kicks off its summer season on Monday, November 4, with the first two weeks being no-obligation "come and try" nights. Swimming Club runs from 5pm-6.15pm and caters for children who can swim one lap with a kickboard, through to those who can swim six laps (110m) unassisted. The club is a fun way to improve swimming skills while having fun and keeping fit. Each child is encouraged in a supportive environment to focus on their techniques and personal best times. There's a sausage sizzle each Monday and awards at the end of the season. Fees are $20 for children 7 years and under, $40 for 8-year-olds, and $80 for 9 years and over. Join Helen Laing at Braidwood Library to hear her talk about her latest book Circles of Fortune. Circles of Fortune is a novel about about the adventurous life of Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson, who made nine voyages to Australia on convict ships and was shipwrecked twice. In 1829 he explored the south west corner of Western Australia, naming Mount Barker and Denmark and many other places. Wilsons Inlet, on which the town of Denmark is situated, is named after him, as is Wilson's grevillea, a local plant. He is also remembered for his humane attitude to the convicts, teaching them to read and write and improving the living conditions on board ship.
